I am on another trip. This time to Zurich and Amsterdam to see and interview jewelers and enjoy the Basel Art and Design Fairs. I'm traveling with Damian Skinner, Deedie Rose, and Sarah Schleuning. I arrived today - a day before everyone else. My day today was spent in airports. I took a KLM flight from SFO to Amsterdam and waited 3 hours for a flight to Zurich. The highlight of all those hours in airports and planes was in the SFO terminal where there was a Viola Frey above the gates to my flight and a Noguchi exhibit unfortunately behind glass but still absolutely beautiful. Can anyone tell me what is going on in the Viola Frey? I am open for interpretations.
Landed in Amsterdam and strolled around the airport for 3 hours.
Arrived in Zurich at the Ambassador de L'Opera hotel in the early afternoon. I stayed here a couple of years ago when Donna and Ralph Briskin and Justin (Talia's husband) and I were on our way to the Alps. That was a great year to be here because there were a number of Dada shows on display for the 100th anniversary. The most wonderful one was Dada Afrika which was at the Rietberg Museum. It combined all I love- primitivism and the great freedom and wit of Dada. I have noticed this year that the Rietberg is having a show called Monsters, Devils and Demons... in religious art the most fascinating beings are always the evil ones. I think this museum has a fantastic collection that suits my idiosyncratic tastes. It was put together by Eduard von der Heydt who acquired his collection of Asian, African, American and Oceanic art primarily in the 1920s and 1930s. Can't wait to see the devils- maybe tomorrow.
Just a block down the street from the hotel is this view.
And across the street is the Opera House.
And from the roof of the hotel.
Wishing you all a wonderful day..
Bye,
Susan
