Munich 2019 Day 1

Hi,

It's morning in Munich. The day is breaking and the birds are singing before the sun is even up.

and then only a couple of hours later.... it is snowing.

And an hour later..its really snowing.

Until it looked like this.

I am again at the Charles Hotel, which I love and having my usual breakfast.

Today I will interview Otto Kunzli about the work I have of his in the Rotasa Collection. Luckily I was able to walk there as the snow had quickly melted away at least on the sidewalks. I walked past some witch hazel which I always love as an unlikely blossoming at this time of year.

After about 20 minutes I reached Otto's door.

Here are a few examples of his work.

Unfortunately Otto wouldn't let me take photos for publication inside his house but I can say that is was in a beautiful old building and consists of 6 rooms including the bathroom. There is a living room with a dining table and 2 large modern chairs, an office lined with books that is shared with his wife Theresa who is also a jeweler, a bedroom, kitchen and another library/office. The hall also was lined with bookshelves and you got the feeling that besides some cases filled with various objects of interest like stone axes, Japanese plates, shells, and other objects that reading was a very important part of their lives.

I had a fantastic 3 hour interview with a discussion not only about the pieces in the Rotasa Collection but also very philosophical thoughts like.....  Why do we even wear jewelry? How is it connected to life? to death? to us? What can it do? It was very thought provoking.

And with that I will leave you with this image that Otto and Theresa used as a theme for one show they had together.

Until the next time,
Susan
