Stellenbosch 2025 Day 1

 Hi,

I hope you are all doing well. I am getting tired of traveling and now longing to get home. Three weeks of traveling is over my limit. But I must keep going until Monday when I get on a plane to come home.

Today we moved from our fantastic hotel in Cape Town to Stellenbosch on the way we passed a lot of shanty towns like the ones in the following photos.

We have arrived in the old town of Stellenbosch, in the heart of a wine-producing region of South Africa. We were on our way to the University of Stellenbosch’s Visual Arts Department to meet with Carine Terreblanche and the Creative Jewelry and Metal Design teachers. Here are some images of the town.

It started pouring rain right as we arrived at the university

This student impressed several people with his wonderful insects.

This one flapped its wings

We saw both student and faculty work in cases they set up for us.

Then we visited the studios and saw the students at work. They seem to be very well trained.

We traveled to Glenelly estate where we spent some time looking at a pretty interesting glass collection and then when to lunch at The Vine Bistro in the same location.

There also seemed to be a wine making facility there too.

Then we went on to a large estate presenting the sculptures of Dylan Lewis. I have to say I felt less than impressed by his work and wondered why he put together this very large display of 60 of his works in the context of this beautiful landscape. He seemed to be very derivative. Judge for yourself.

There is a sculpture in this image of a cat catching an antelope

Off in the distance is a torso in its side

This little bird sculpture was my favorite

That night we ate at the hotel restaurant with some of the professors from the jewelry program.

Ok I am saying bye bye until next time.

Hugs,
Susan
