Day 7 Mexico City

 Hi,

Today we started at the National Museum of Anthropology, where our guide Marlene took us through and explained so many things we didn't understand the first time we visited. It is really a huge and wonderful place filled with the history of the early days on this land. Many groups of people and cultures started here. You walked through on a timeline.

A Tamayo mural in the background of the entry

Another photo of the fountain. You can't really see the imagery on it but there is an eagle and faces of particular gods, but the whole thing has meaning.

This museum was built on a site where many animal skeletons were found. This is a mural of the types of animals that were here. We are in prehistoric times.

Here is a skeleton now.

These are the people who were here.

There is a god with a giant feather headdress right in the upper middle of this, with attendants on the side. The figures below, against the dark reddish color, are in the underworld.

This pyramid is showing the snake god- it is possible to see the snake's body and it's raddler.

This is the god of the sun, who is dying. So the sun dies at night and then comes back to life in the morning.

Curious figure

Bone necklaces

I just love these creatures... don't know anything about them

This is a clay figure that also serves as a drinking vessel or vase

Beautiful necklace and shield

In the front is the moon god, and in the back is the Aztec calendar

More shell and beaded jewelry. I love the one with the big shells on the left.

Close up

The next three images show the same figure in different formats. I think he was a king and wore this jade mask when he was buried.

This is a painting of him

This is his tomb with him in it.

I had continued this email with images from a private residence that I wasn't supposed to share with you. If you saw the images of the house, please don't share any of them with anyone.
Thanks for doing that.

That's it for today.

Hugs,
Susan
