Munich Day 6

Hi again,

Friday, March 9th

So the day started off as usual with my usual breakfast and the overcast skies with brisk weather - perfect for walking.

At 8:45 I walked over to the next AJF panel discussion at the Galerie Handwerk that started at 9 am with young writers who have written for AJF recently. These included Astrid Abbink (Dutch), Ilaria Ruggiero (Italy - I think), Urmas Lüüs (Estonia), and Katia Rabey (Russia/ Israel). There was a good crowd and we got into the very old conversation about how criticality helps or hurts the field… and of course everyone is very gung-ho on spreading the word as if it was a gospel but no one is really trying to publish outside the bubble. Sigh. Somehow the field is stuck with this identity that keeps it stuck. Anyway good to air it all out again I guess.

Michael and Karen Rotenberg rented a taxi/ van for us today… and it turned out to be the same driver as yesterday. He was very patient. As I hope you all are since we have another day of jewelry jewelry jewelry. Our first stop was the Villa Stuck which is a beautiful old estate that has been turned into a museum and almost every year they have a show specifically related to jewelry or in this case metalsmithing within the part of the museum that was a residence. It is a very beautiful and highly decorated place as you can see. This year's show is of the work of Rudolf Bott. It is exquisite. I hope you can tell by my images. Very rough sometimes but with a refinement of proportion and surface that makes it delicious and other times a simplicity and fineness of line that reflects a real sensitivity. Rudolf also did a wonderful installation of wood with tables and chairs that indicated dining and also kept you away from the work. Enjoy the next series of images.

On to the Blanco show which wasn’t too great. I was hoping for more from Patrick Aaron Decker - the enamel necklaces.

But these were pretty humorous by Tani Eshed.

Lunch at the Weinhous Neuner- was ok but nothing great. Lots of miscommunication with the waiter.

Next we went off to some shows that were off in a part of the city that was a bit away from the center and there were a series of shows we walked between. The first one featured Deborah Rudolph, Marie-Louise Kristensen, Annette Dam, and Panjapol Kulpapangkom. The theme of the show was “OffBeat" so everything had a rhythm or related to a beat.

Around the corner we ran into Suzanne Beautyman at another show featuring her work along with Mette Saabye, Matt Lambert, Nanna Grønborg, and Josefine Rønsholt. Their theme was “Echo".

The next stop featured a show called “Wispers" with work by Jivan Astfalck, Laura Bradshaw-Heap, and Rachel Darboume. Frankly not too interesting to me except for the last image of hanging pearls which had a good story about where they came from and how one was added each day so it was like a calendar.

Across the street was the "Mutter Schmuckers" with Laura Bradshw-Heap again and Hannah-May Chapman, Jaki Coffey and when I went into this tiny space there was a mother singing to her baby.

The next small space was occupied by a professor from the university in Birmingham where in fact a lot of these last small shows have been getting their artists. Toni Mayner found an old building in her neighborhood that been abandoned 20 years ago and was being refurbished but before they removed all the wallpaper she took some with her and did a series using scraps of it in the jewelry.

Then we stopped in a mostly Greek group of artists and I am afraid I didn’t keep track of who was who. It was a bit confusing but here are a few images and also one of Sharon Berman trying something on.

Once again we visited Ellen Maurer-Ziloli and I got to consider the Otto Kunzli gold decorative architectural necklace as well as the beautiful Manfred Bischoff. Still thinking.

And last but not least a visit to the Galerie Beyond space which was beautiful and with interesting artists. Again I am afraid I didn’t get the name of this one that I particularly liked. This handkerchief comes in the box and has the embroidered word “Remember” on it. It is tied into a knot. A forget-me-knot.

This is by the same artist. The shirt/ poncho has a silver leaf patch on it and when the shirt is wash it will disappear with only a trace of it’s existence left.

These are a few other things I liked a Galerie Beyond.

Here is the gang in Galerie Beyond.

Ok if you aren’t sick of jewelry yet you just might be destined to be a collector of it. The next few days will be a little less intense so hang on it is almost over.

Hugs,
Susan
