Last night we arrived in Christchurch late and all we wanted was a special room service dinner and a comfy bed at the Heritage Hotel where Damian had made us reservations. We didn’t really get the good dinner… at least I didn’t since they didn’t have a caesar salad on the menu much to my dismay and disbelief since I had become convinced that these salads were available in all civilized places. So dinner was a strange combination of an iceberg lettuce salad and warm new potatoes.
Across the way from our hotel is the grand old cathedral which was badly damaged in the massive earthquake they had a few years ago. Small bit of gossip… this is where Marion Fulk was married the first time.

You can see evidence of it all over the downtown. There is even a sign talking about what other buildings used to be near the church.

We wandered our way through town and stopped in at this book store.

Where Damian suggested this as a good book about NZ.

As you can see it is raining here, quite hard at times and just as we were approaching our destination we were hit by a full-blown squall of sleet and a furious wind kicked up. After struggling for about a half block we were finally able to duck into The National Gallery. Happy to be out of the weather.

Caroline Billing is the owner of The National Gallery (which is always hard to get Google to find since there are several large museums called The National Gallery)… anyway, it is a wonderful jewelry gallery that has had to move numerous times since the earthquake. But now seem to finally be settled in a lovely space.

Areta Wilkinson’s jewelry which is very much an NZ expression. We are going to visit her tomorrow and I will get more of a sense of what she does.

A nice arrangement of Karl Fritsch rings at The National Gallery.

After our lunch, Caroline dropped us off at CoCA - Center of Contemporary Art. There were several good shows but I particularly liked the one by Ann Shelton called Dark Matter. One series consisted of photographs of ikebana flower arrangements depicting various female archetypes.

My favorite was the Hysteric..very funny.

There was also a good show with a British photographer named John Stezaker. He collaged together photos in very clever ways.

We stopped in the bookstore.

And look what we found. Anyone see a familiar title there? Wow, it's Chara’s book, Rose’s art collecting sister is famous all the way to New Zealand.
On the walk back to the hotel I took some more photos of the damaged buildings in Christchurch.
And finally dinner...
That is all for today.
Hugs,
Susan
