Zurich and Amsterdam June 2018 Day 3

Hi again,

Today or rather Monday was spend at the home and studio of Bernhard Schobinger.  Bernhard is a jeweler who is quirky, highly skilled but a rebel, punk, a loner and bizarre. As you will see his jewelry is made of as many things as you can think of much of which comes from the bottom of Lake Geneva. He goes diving often and has done so for most of his life so he has discovered deposits of Neolithic artifacts, live ammunition, pieces of old jewelry, old porcelain electrical sockets, and many other stones and things he uses in his jewelry. I think all he actually does is dive, make jewelry and read. It is a very monk-like person who follows Zen Buddhism and meditates. He also has a bit of a hard time speaking English so some of my impressions may be based on his difficulty in expressing himself, but by any measure, he is an interesting guy. Here he is:

The first thing we did was go out back to his garden and almost the first thing he said was that he stands on this rock every morning and uses the hose to take a shower...

We sat by the pool for a while and asked him questions about specific pieces that either Deedie or I own and recorded what he had to say. Each piece had a story.

Then we went up the ladder into his studio space.

His house is filled with wonderful objects from both western and eastern worlds and often mixed together.

Then we went to lunch at a wonderful restaurant by the lake. However, the smell of nearby sheep shit and the vast number of flies was a bit of a detriment to the overall satisfaction with the meal.

The people at the table are Bernhard, Damian, Sarah, Deedie, Annelise (Bernhard's wife) and Felix Flury (Berhnard's dealer who was kind enough to drive us to Bernhard's house)

Back at the studio, we began to talk again.

And soon we were looking at jewelry...

An, of course, a lot more which I didn't photograph.

Finally in a state of exhaustion but powering through we all went to dinner with Monica Gaspare and Christoph Zellweger. They are lovely and served us a beautiful meal which I only remembered to photograph at the end.

That's all for today. I will try to catch up tomorrow since I am now a day behind.

Hugs to you all,
Susan
