Hi,
Today I spent the day with my dear friend Bennett Bean. Whenever I am in NYC I ask him to drive from his idyllic farmland in New Jersey into the insanity of NYC and each time he says he would love to. He is such a dear friend. So off we go to the Salon Art + Design at the Armory which holds memories for us from the days when the NY SOFA used to be held here. It is a mixed bag of a few interesting things and lots of beautiful but a bit boring things.
Here are just a few of the things that Bennett and I found intriguing. This first booth- Sarah Myerscough from London had a couple of the best things.
First a Maisie Broadhead. Photograph about jewelry. Her mother Carolyn is an amazing jeweler herself. The ball and chain are in 3D while the woman is in a photo.
Then this woodworker- Michael Peterson has always intrigued me.
This was the other gallery of interest-Galerie Maria Wetterfren from Paris.
And this piece isn't in the photo but was from their space too and I liked very much. It is made of fabric and has and oddly appealing and repelling presence.
And one Alberto Buri - I am compelled by his burnt pieces.
But probably the most intriguing things we saw were not in the fair proper but out in the hall . Eileen Fisher the clothing designer has been very inventive in her desire to be environmentally sensitive as possible and she came up with a way to turn her scraps into art. Have a look.
Pretty cool huh? Can you see the shapes of clothing in these?
Now we are off to the Met.
I am not going to the Jewelry show today... that will come tomorrow. Today I am going to the Native American Indian show. A truly beautiful exhibition. The bead work alone is spectacular but everything is pretty exciting. Here are some ones I liked.
This last one is snow goggles from the north.
So with time to kill in the vastness of the Met we decided to go to one of our favorite areas- Asian screens and Buddhas from the Edo period. Of course everything is beautifully arranged with a restraint only the Japanese can provide. Here are some favorites.
These Mynah birds are emblems of honesty, independent thinking and even resistance to unjust authority. We need a lot of those around today.
I loved this little guy.
That's all for today.
Until tomorrow.
Hugs,
Susan
