Munich March 2019 Day 4

Hi,

I am sorry I have been so long in getting this next post to you. I have been overwhelmed by events every day and so didn't have any time to put this blog together. I will try to do two of them today but the internet gods of the airport will have to be happy today for that to happen.

Thursday began with a cloudy sky and it rained a good part of the day. Today started off with a panel discussion at Galerie Handwerk that I moderated and including the Collectors and Curators - Deedie Rose, Toni Greenbaum, Anni Nørskov Mørch and Karen Pontoppidan.  I don't have an image because of course I was up at the front and couldn't take one. It was an interesting discussion of how collectors and curators choose the things they do for their collections or their exhibitions and seemed to meet with audience approval. Helen Drutt and a famous collecting Italian family were in the front row. Kind of intimidating.

The exhibition at Galerie Handwerk was curated by Ruudt Peters and is called 21 Grams. It is a reference to the Soul and is an interpretation of of just what that might be. There is a piece of jewelry and an explanation on the card which I hope you can read.

After viewing the exhibit the bus that was arranged to take us to our various locations picked us up and we went to the Villa Stuck which is a beautiful building where there is often a show related to jewelry during Schmuck week. It is the old residence of the painter Franz von Stuck built at the end of the 19th century and truly an opulent place. The show there this year was for Karen Pontoppidan, yes the same one that was on the panel. Her dealer and art historian Ellen Maurer Ziloli took us through the show and talked about her work. It is very personal and quiet.

It was not the best setting for Karen's work which is very personal and private. The opulence of the villa did not suit the display of the work particularly well. ... at least in my opinion.

Now we went to the Pinakothek der Moderne to see the show that Karen Pontoppidan (yes her again) curated called Schmuckismus which was showing jewelry in the context of political and social commentary. There has been a lot of controversy over this idea and this name - which is a made up word. There are some interesting points raised about what is jewelry's role and what can it say well and what can it not say or isn't it hard enough to make a good piece of jewelry without having to have a concept to hide behind. Are the concepts old hat or way behind what the art world is already saying so if this work was in an art show how would it hold up? So one thing you can say for sure is that this show is raising a lot of interesting questions.

Stefan Hauser "The Code" each one is made up of some kind of drug

Nanna Melland - the center piece is made of  rusted IUDs- a powerful and primitive piece Ben Lignel

Ben Lignel -Thank God I'm White- this was the piece that provoked the most conversation especially since Tiff Massey who is Black was with us.

Jasmin Matsakow These necklaces are made from Stinging Nettles which she harvested and dried. They are potentially painful to wear

Nadine Kuffner- Jewelry take off on Richard Serra- what is the political statement here?

So the internet in the airport is not letting me upload the images so I am going to stop for now and finish the rest of Day 4 when I can get a good internet connection again.

xo,
Susan
