Hi,
We started the day having brunch at an Ottolenghi restaurant in Spitalfields area near Gallery SO and Whitechapel Gallery.... this was the second restaurant of his we have visited and I have to say I love his food. Yum..
At Gallery SO I was looking at Bernhard Schobinger jewelry mainly. Here are a few examples.
Glass bottle bottom
Shards of glass with screws Various stones slabs and whole
Large old nails with turquoise from Iran
Gallery SO sign on Brick Lane road
On to WhiteChapel Gallery which is right around the corner.
Here we saw two really interesting shows. The first was called Radical Figures: Painting in the New Millennium. It had a fantastic group of really fascinating paintings. Loved it. I have chosen one by each of the artists included. Spend some time with these if you can. They all take a while to reveal themselves.
Cecily Brown "The Maids Day Off"
Sanya Kantarovsky "Campfire"
Daniel Richter "Anger, Bill and Mark"
Michael Armitage
Dana Schutz "You and Me"
Nicole Eisenman something about the Past and Future
Christina Quarles "Cruelty"
Ryan Mosley "Snakes training Snakes"
Tschabalala Self "NYPD"
And a second show at WhiteChapel was also quite mysterious. It was by the artist Carlos Bunga from Portugal. The walls of the space were all old brick while what appears to be inner walls are painted either white or a usual greenish color. On the brick walls tools and chairs are hanging while nothing but peeling paint appears on the painted surfaces.
Towards the end of the room you can see a break in the painted wall and there is an old sewing machine.
Then as you come around the wall you suddenly realize that the painted wall is cardboard and a part of the exhibition.
It was a great mix of the old furniture and tools within very different contexts.
Over the Tower Bridge
To the Fashion and Textile Museum for a show with the designer Tricia Guild from Designers Guild.. an interior designer. She had good PR.
She started in the 60s and here is an example of what she was doing.
After a stop back at Collect to pick up a few things - some funny brooches by Herman Hermsen.
Then a walk back to the hotel past Hyde Park with daffodils in bloom.
That's all for today.
Hugs,
Susan

Loved the art exhibits, nice overlap with Biennale, makes me realize we are almost in an contemporary art desert in the Bay Area...true?
