Hi,
This was the best day yet. We started the day at the Iziko National Gallery to see a Sue Williamson show. She was an artist I knew from years ago. I saw a show in New York of hers. She is very interested in civil rights and given that she is a South African I can now understand that. This was a very moving exhibition about the things going on in South Africa from a civil rights point of view. Very emotional.

A Darth Vader figure of the tech world
This is the beginning of the Sue Williamson show called There is Something I Must Tell You.
These depicted women were the ones who got things started or acted as healers or were respected by the community.
Black Africans were required to carry cards or passports to enter the cities. This is the grave of Annie Silinhs who refused to carry a card. Her image is above.
Photographs of the women ( and 3 women from the tour)
The passports
This was another amazing woman named Gertrude Ray. As the wall text says: she was a busy woman helping workers but she always had time to listen.
These images are missing the people who should be carrying the bundle of twigs, rowing the boat, and climbing the tree. They are the disappeared.

From every place she visited.
Sue spent a lot of time in District Six where people lived in an integrated society and when Apartheid came along and wanted a divided society the entire area was razed. To this day no one will develop it. Below are photos of a family who lived in District Six. Sue follows their fate.

Then we went on to the Ellerman House/ Gallery with a wine gallery/restaurant where we had dinner.

It was a full and wonderful day packed with memorable images. I don't think I did it justice but hopefully, you got a tiny taste.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
Big hugs,
Susan
This is just incredible. So moving!
ReplyDeleteYou can stream Kentridge episodes on MUBI, 9 episodes of how he makes art. You will recognize the pieces in this post, they pop up periodically. Fascinating....THB
